How to Talk to Kids about Roe v Wade & Abortion (A Christian Perspective).

Talking to children about complex and sensitive topics can be challenging, but it is crucial for their understanding and moral development. One such topic that often requires careful navigation is abortion. As parents, Bible study leaders, or mentors, it is essential to approach this conversation with clarity, compassion, and a biblical perspective. By proactively engaging with children on this subject, we can provide them with the necessary knowledge and guidance to understand this issue through the lens of faith and values.

First, it is important that you don’t assume what they already know or don’t know about the topic. You might be surprised to learn they know more than you thought. You might also find yourself amused by the portions they are not so familiar with. Be prepared for the unknown.

The first step in talking to children about the subject of abortion is not to wait for them to approach you first. Depending on the kind of relationship you already have with the child, kids may not ask questions. They may even think they know all they need to know about a topic. Children have all kinds of conversations with their peers, and their teachers are likely having these conversations with them. You can, however, ask if they have heard about abortion and what is going on in the news. If you are a parent, Bible study leader, or an authority figure or mentor, you can speak to them as a teacher would because, in many ways, you are.

Whatever method you use, remember to come from a biblical point of view. Speak the truth to them. You may opt to exclude the graphic details. However, you must tell them the truth because the enemy is ready to tell them lies.

Use this as an opportunity to explain the sinful condition of this world and our need for the Savior, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Explain that according to the Word of God, life begins before conception, yet people do not understand this and, for selfish reasons, are unwilling to accept it as a fact. Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” Before your first heartbeat, you were already known intimately by the Lord, your creator. Only He can determine when you began to exist. Because of His Word, we can be certain it is before birth. Because of all these reasons, some people unfortunately make the wrong decision to prevent a child from entering this world. It breaks God’s heart each time this happens. It may seem like an OK decision if we don’t consider what God thinks about that decision. In fact, we can make many wrong decisions if we don’t think about what God would want us to do.

Leave room for their questions and don’t be intimidated by silent periods in the conversation. Continue to work on building a close and loving, yet mutually respectful, relationship with children. That will help you know more about what they are hearing and learning while they are away from you and it will also help you know how to speak with them. Always pray for wisdom and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.
